The Creekview Phase 2 Villages and Westbrook Segment 3 Backbone Joint Trench Project’s took nearly 1 year to complete and was an exciting project for our team. The project consisted of 4 Villages with 264 Lots, a backbone with a bridge, and installation of a gas main beneath an active creek.
The Villages required excavation of approximately 4 miles of mainline joint trench, installation of 14.7 miles of conduit and 11 gas tie-in points. With 5 other subcontractors working on their portions of the project, our team had to have strong communication and coordination with the other trades to ensure we completed the work in the correct sequencing while still meeting our client’s scheduled milestones.
The Westbook backbone phase included construction of a 500’ bridge, requiring installation of a 530’ steel encased 8″ HDPE gas main constructed 20’ deep in a trench beneath the creek embankment. Using 5 pumps, working 24 hours a day, the bridge contractor (RNR Construction) diverted the water to allow for an open cut excavation. The steel casing and HDPE gas main were welded and built to the south of the creek, then walked into place with a coordinated effort of numerous people and equipment from our expansive company owned fleet, including 4 excavators, a crane, backhoe, and spotters.
The main challenge of this project was the procurement and installation of the backbone phase. It took a great deal of pre-planning and pre-fabrication to ensure successful installation. Lund’s team of Superintendents, Project Managers and Engineers collaborated frequently to develop a plan using the right equipment and manpower to successfully install the steel encased gas main beneath the creek. This included a separate engineered sheet pile and dewatering plan, staging materials, procuring the right equipment, rigging, and field coordination to safely complete the installation per plan.
Lund’s successful procurement and completion of these two projects, came as a result of years of successful projects with Anthem United and extensive experience with joint trench utility construction. Our team’s consistent delivery of on-time, under budget, sustained quality, competitive bidding, and going above and beyond contractual obligations to assist the client as needed has helped us build a strong client relationship.
